Asked if we would like it or not, I don’t think anyone of us would elect to have a near-death experience and yet a number of people I know have had just such an horrible encounter, including me. It’s a lonely, personal moment in time that cannot be shared, simply because of the uniqueness of the event and one’s reaction to it.
For me, a heart attack and subsequent cardiac arrest brought me to the very edge of the precipice. What did I see when I peered over that edge? Did my life flash before me? Did I see a bright light? Did I hear the voice of my Lord calling to me? No, none of the above. What I did experience, however, was a need to be close to God that I had never felt before. And an amazing sense of peace that whatever I was to face was going to be okay because I wasn’t facing it alone. Of course, there is One who will never allow you to go through any of life’s experiences alone. All we have to do is reach out and find the hand that never lets go.
